The Last Temptation of Christ: Imaginative and inticing from Nikos Kazantzakis’ novel which presumes in regards to Jesus’ self-questions while he grasps he has been selected by The lord to tote His message. Minutes of incredible beauty are reduced somehow by mundane discussion and dull extends. Cast includes Willem Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, Barbara Hershey, Harry Dean Stanton, David Bowie, Vema Bloom, Andre Gregory, Juliette Caton, Roberts Blossom, Irvin Kershner, Nehemiah Persoff, and Barry Miller. Crusoe: Dense rendition of the oft-filmed Defoe classic, with Quinn cast as the title personality, a servant dealer who’s shipwrecked on a defected isle, where he must handle loneliness, seclusion, survival. The most captivating of all is his growing relation with black combatant Sapara. Cast includes Aidan Quinn, Ade Sapara, Warren Clark, Hepburn Grahame, Jimmy Nail, Tim Spall, Michael Higgins, Shane Rimmer, and Oliver Platt. (91 minutes, 1988)

Track of the Cat: Tennessee Williams meets American midevil in this unusually abrasive drama in regards to a home filled with bitterness, remorse, and envy, and how the search for a killer cougar changes the dynamics of the family. Cast includes Teresa Wright, Tab Hunter, Diana Lynn, Beulah Bondi, Philip Tonge, William Basket, and Carl (Alfalfa) Switzer. (102 minutes, 1954)

The Sellout: Small town newspaper editor Pidgeon finds himself in over his head while he tries to get the wares on corrupt sheriff Gomez. Cast includes Walter Pidgeon, John Hodiak, Audry Totter, Paula Raymond, Cameron Mitchell, Karl Malden, Everett Sloane, and Thomas Gomez. (83 minutes, 1952)

Marie Antoinette: Visually sumptuous account of an adolescent’s voyage from Vienna to the Palace at Versailles and the throne of France. Author-director Coppola’s Marie (as played by Dunst) is a modern-day gal, with contemporary music set contrary to the pomp and circumstance of the 18th century life. Starts to tire eventually and ends with a cry, not a smash although there’s much to like here. Cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, Judy Davis, Tear Tom, Steve Coogan, Rose Byrne, Asia Argento, Molly Shannon, Shirley Henderson, Danny Huston, Marianne Faithfull, Mary Nighy, and Sarah Adler. (123 minutes, 2006)

Alien Nation: In the near future, a race of strange-looking aliens is gradually (and grudgingly) being integrated into civilization. Worldweary L.A. cop Caan takes one of the aliens on as his partner, so he could track down the aliens who murdered his prior associate. Cast includes James Caan, Mandy Patinkin, Terence Stamp, Kevin Chief Howard, and Leslie Bevins. (94 minutes, 1988)

Lars and the Real Girl: Sugary film in regards to socially shocked Gosling, who buys a life sized doll and treats her as if she’s alive, to the appall of his older sibling, and brother in law, and the neighbors in their tightknit society. Luckily, an understanding physician (Clarkson) guides them in the right direction. Cast includes Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson, Kelli Gamer, and Paul Schneider. (106 minutes, 2007)

Food of the Gods: This is a terrible adaptation of H. G. Wells’ novel. An odd event has caused mammoth expansion in the size of wasps, chickens and rats. Cast includes Marjoe Gortner, Pamela Franklin, Ida Lupino, Jon Cypher, and Ralph Meeker. (88 minutes, 1976)
