Top tips to look after your pet during the credit crunch

Here are alist of tips most vets in sussexcan agree on.

The recent recession has been getting to us all, and animal shelters seem to be getting close to full with the influx of animals unable to be cared for anymore. Animal owners are weighing up a hard choice over the family pet. Here’s afew pointers to help you and fido through these hard times.

  • If you dont already have a pet, do some research into how much getting one will cost. Pets do cost alot to look after in the long run, and you have to weigh up if you can look after one? Try to get one from an animal shelter and give an abandoned pet some love.
  • Take out pet insurance. Its not always cheap, but it’ll be alot more cheaper than all the vet fees that you’ll have to pay in the future. Cover can cost from as little from £8 per month -shop around online and find out.
  • Downgrade their food- your downgrading the brands with your food, so why shouldnt fluffy chip in for his keep? Your pet may reject the cheaper food at first (some being picky), but if thats all they have to eat they’ll come around- usually in five minutes time.
  • Make sure your pet has been neutered. You may beable to afford one pet, but a whole litter maybe the straw that breaks that camels back? This can help keep the numbers of animals down as the shelters cant really cope with more animals.

You’ve done these tips to try and keep hold of your pets, but sadly, what if those animal hospital bills are too much? Vet referrals are so expensive these days! My local Worthing vet has recently put up his prices due to the recent recession.

  • Get into contact with the animal shetlers to see if they can take your beloved pet.
  • Friends and relatives may be willing to lend a helping hand to you and look after your pet temporarily/ permenently.
  • NEVER ABANDON YOUR PET -thats when it becomes animal cruelty.
  • Send an ad to the classifieds in your local paper to try and see if anyone will take your furry friend.
